Netflix - Encoding for Streaming
Want to know how Netflix works their mojo and weaves their magic? Well, apparently so do a lot of other people so they decided to write it all down. Check out this blog entry detailing the encoding process for Netflix and some of what it takes to get movies online.
We encode most content at 500, 1000, 1600, and 2200kbps VBR, but some titles whose source quality merits it have also been encoded at 3400kbps. The highest bitrate encodes are fit into 720×480 non-square pixels (the usual 1.2 PAR for widescreen content, 0.9 PAR for 4:3), but optimum encoding at lower bitrates is achieved with fewer pixels. Encoded films are normally at 24fps to match the source, while shot-to-video and mixed material is de-interlaced to 30fps (or 25fps for PAL content).
How Bankruptcy Would Benefit GM
This financial bailout business is starting to rub me the wrong way. Why the hell does everyone expect they should get bailed out because they are losing money and will go out of business? Specifically why should the auto industry be bailed out when they have refused to what is necessary to keep customers happy and provide the merchandise they are willing to buy at a price they can afford?
I don’t see the government stepping in to help out Yahoo.
If Microsoft hit the skids would the government step in and give them money?
What about Google?
What if GE tumbled, would billions be spent to save them?
What about Burger King or McDonald’s? Will bills be passed to give them bailout money?
If Wal-Mart were to tank shouldn’t they be given billions to help keep the economy going and save jobs? I mean they employ a lot of people.
Free enterprise baby! Sink or swim! No free lunch!
Just because you can’t make your business work because you refuse to offer goods and services people want, doesn’t mean you get to cry to the government and the taxpayers when you can’t pay the bills.
You know, it sucks all around and everyone is going to be running to the government with their hand out, so what makes one company different or better than another? Who gets the money? Who sinks? Which jobs are worth saving? Where does it end?
I think article is pretty reasonable in regards to what GM should do. There are measures in place, it’s called bankruptcy. People do it all the time and chances are the rate is going to go up, but that doesn’t mean big business should just get handed sacks full of money.
Failure to plan on your part doesn’t mean legislation passed on our part to save your hide.
